I read that Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham scored 46 points on 45 field goal attempts in a 137-135 ovetime win over the Washington Wizards on November 10, 2025. This story reminded me of Hall of Fame forward Chris Webber. I recalled that back when I watched the NBA, Mr. Webber had a similarly inefficient high scoring game. I did not remember the season (much less game) off the top of my head, so I referred to the Game Highs section of his Basketball Reference page to nail down the game. That method worked. On January 5, 2001, Mr. Webber’s Sacramento Kings lost to the Indiana Pacers in overtime by a score of 93-91. Mr. Webber played 49:58 of a possible 53 minutes and had 51 points on 24-47 shooting from the floor (0-1 from three) and 3-6 from the free throw line. While 51 points on 47 field goal attempts leaves something to be desired in the efficiency department (notwithstanding the fact that Mr. Webber did shoot better than 50%), Kings players not named “Chris Webber” had 44 points on a ghastly 15-59 from the floor (1-7 from three and 9-13 from the line), so perhaps Mr. Webber had good reason to put up 47 field goal attempts.
