I read a Hacker News thread about a new Android browser called Helium Browser. Helium is an open-source browser project based on GrapheneOS’s Vanadium, which in turn is based on Chromium, adding extension support to Vanadium while losing Vanadium’s tight integration with GrapheneOS. It is a good post and interesting-looking project given that there are not too many open source Chromium forks available on Android, with the two leaders I am aware of being Brave and Cromite, neither of which are available in F-Droid by default for different reasons. But let us set aside the merits of Helium and direct our attention to a comment by user pjmlp:
Yet another Chromium clone, we should create a Distrowatch site for Chrome.
I rolled my eyes when I read the comment in light of the fact that the original poster clearly explained the project, what it is, and what it is not (always good to clarify what something is not). But then I thought about it a little more. Distrowatch for Chromium-based browsers is actually a great idea. We could expand it into Browserwatch. Is this my ticket to fame?
