Venezuela is one of just a few countries that recognizes the independence of Georgia’s two breakway regions, Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The Jamestown foundation suggests that Georgia has a golden opportunity to push for Venezuela to de-recognize Abkhazia and South Ossetia now that Nicolas Maduro has (been) moved to my home borough of Brooklyn. While this may be true in theory, I fear that Marco Rubio is busy enough that Venezuela’s official position on the status of Abkhazia and South Ossetia will not be high on his to-do list. But I suppose it would not hurt for Georgia to ask (and perhaps ease up on trying to ban the political opposiion and certain relgious groups while maintaining a very confused posture with respect to the country that is responsible for maintaining its two breakway regions).
Georgia’s Breakaway Regions and Venezuela
There is presently a rare opportunity for Tbilisi to push for Syria and Venezuela’s formal reversals of recognition. The Kremlin’s close partners, Maduro and al-Assad, are no longer in a position to influence recognition of Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
