I saw an Anime News Network article titled Samurai Pizza Cats Anime Inspires New Comic Series in my feed reader. That brought back memories. I have watched many anime, evinced by my having been able to put together a list of recommended series from 2011-2020 for general audiences and anime year-end reviews in 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024 (look forward to 2025 in a few months, although I have some work to do for that one). Careful readers will find buried in my articles that my favorite anime encompassing all formats is FLCL and my favorite full TV series is Aria the Origination. But what is the first anime I watched? The answer is technically Samurai Pizza Cats. I remember watching it on the former WB in the 1994-97 area. It came before Pokémon for me, so Samurai Pizza Cats is the first anime I saw. Whether the 1990s English “localization” bore any meaningful resemblance to the original Japanese script is, of course, another question entirely.
