On March 30, 2021, I published an article on the subject of Oscar De La Hoya’s subsequently aborted boxing comeback plan. While I opined that Mr. De La Hoya could make his own life choices, I cautioned against the comeback idea, noting several negative factors such as the fact he was 48 years old, 12 years removed from his last fight, and had retired after said last fight because he looked shot as he lost in lopsided fashion to Manny Pacquiao, who was at that time moving up two weight divisions. Speaking of Mr. Pacquiao, he returned from a 4-year hiatus on July 19 at age 46. While one could question the wisdom of Mr. Pacquiao’s comeback decision, I saw no need to cover it in article form because Mr. Pacquaio was still a solid fighter in his previous fight at 42. I have not watched the fight yet, but it sounds like Mr. Pacquiao looked good (all things considered) in fighting to a majority draw against the much younger welterweight titlist, Marcos Barrios.
